“Aema” is a 2025 South Korean historical comedy-drama series that premiered on Netflix on August 22, 2025. The show is a fictionalized account inspired by the making of the real-life 1982 erotic film Madame Aema, which was a sensation in Korea in the 1980s.
The series follows two best friends, Hui-ran (played by Lee Ha-nee), a top actress, and Joo-ae (played by Bang Hyo-rin), a nightclub dancer who becomes a rookie actress. They collaborate on the film, which challenges the male-dominated film industry of the 1980s. While the film faces censorship, its bold nature leads to immense box office success. The series explores the struggles and triumphs of these women as they navigate a corrupt and exploitative industry.
