Following the catastrophic destruction of Asteroid M, the second season of X-Men ’97 finds the hero team fractured across the timeline, with Rogue, Magneto, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Xavier stranded in Ancient Egypt fighting Pharaoh Rama-Tut and a rising En Sabah Nur, while Cyclops and Jean Grey fight through a dystopian 3960 A.D. alongside a young Nathan Summers to secure temporal technology. Meanwhile in the 1990s, Forge, Bishop, and the remaining mutant resistance battle growing political intolerance and Sentinel Squad ONE. Once reunited in the present, Xavier establishes X-Corp as a corporate-backed mutant sanctuary, but tactical fractures deepen as Wolverine uncovers a revitalized Weapon X program grafting Celestial technology onto mutant DNA, and Cable forms a ruthless paramilitary X-Force unit to hunt down Apocalypse’s lieutenants. The season culminates in a massive siege at X-Corp over a resurrected Gambit, whose body is being used as a living host for Apocalypse’s celestial essence; despite Cyclops and Jean trying to save Remy, Cable shoots him at point-blank range, accelerating Apocalypse’s total takeover and turning Remy into a hybrid vessel that subjugates nearby mutants, destroying Xavier’s dream and leaving the X-Men scattered once again.
