What Is Our Hero, Balthazar About?
The film follows Balthazar (Jaeden Martell), a privileged Manhattan high schooler desperate for social currency. After posting performative videos about gun control to win over his crush, Eleanor (Pippa Knowles), he fixates on an online troll he identifies as a “potential school shooter.”
Driven by a savior complex, Balthazar travels to a remote Texas town to “de-radicalize” the troll, only to find Solomon (Asa Butterfield)—a deeply troubled, impoverished young man who is more a victim of his own circumstances than a budding villain. The “comedy” stems from Balthazar’s complete inability to understand the reality of the life Solomon leads, leading to a collision between elite performative morality and gritty working-class hardship.
